Hidalgo County, Texas Inmate Search

A Hidalgo County inmate search tool is an online resource that allows individuals to search for information on inmates currently or previously in custody in the county’s jail. The process of searching this database is called an inmate search or inmate lookup. Hidalgo County offers a public-facing county tool for performing an inmate search called Jail Records. This tool is maintained by the Department of Public Safety and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

The county inmate search retrieves records for inmates in custody at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center and state and federal inmates. In addition to local arrests, state and federal arrests can also be made, but the inmates are taken into custody at different facilities. Information on state inmates can be found using the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Inmate Search. Federal inmates, on the other hand, are held by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and inmate information can be searched for using the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Inmate Locator.

Although local police departments in larger cities in Hidalgo County, such as the McAllen Police Department and Edinburg Police Department, can make arrests, they do not maintain a separate jail roster. All arrestees are eventually booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center, and inmate information can be retrieved through the county’s inmate search. An inmate search typically includes the following:

  • Full name
  • Booking number
  • Description of defendant (race, height, weight, hair color)
  • Booking date
  • Release date
  • Description of the charges
  • Name of arresting agency

Jail Facility Overview in Hidalgo County

The Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center is the official county jail. Located in Edinburg, the detention center serves as the central booking center for individuals awaiting trial and individuals serving their sentences. The facility houses arrestees serving county-level charges from arrests made by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments. It is a medium-security operational facility with up to 1200 beds, although the jail is frequently overpopulated due to the county’s high population.

The facility is sectioned into different custody levels, including segregation units, booking operations, population housing, medical areas, etc. The Hidalgo County Jail holds adult male and female inmates only, as it does not operate a juvenile center. Juvenile detention for the county is at the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) as mandated by Texas law, and their records are confidential. The operator of the Hidalgo detention center is the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, while the regulator for the facility is the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Hidalgo County does not operate other holding facilities (satellite jails, temporary holding centers, or work-release facilities). All bookings are processed through the main jail. It, however, has the East Hidalgo Detention Facility, a federal serving facility that houses United States Marshals Service (USMS) detainees. It is one of the Texas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Centers.

Hidalgo County Visitation Rules and Schedules

The Hidalgo County Adult Detention Facility balances allowing inmates to stay in touch with their families and enforcing facility rules by setting inmate visitation standards and guidelines that visitors must follow. Key things to note while planning to visit an inmate in Hidalgo County to prevent visitation privileges from being revoked are as follows:

  • Only individuals on the inmate’s pre-approved list of visitors can visit. The list is established during booking and can be updated as the sentence extends.
  • Pre-approved visitors are added by name and date of birth, which are verified on the visit. Inmates can add the visitor’s name on a provided card if the date of birth is not known.
  • Visitors will be rejected if under the influence, have a history of being disruptive, are known gang members, or have been booked within 12 months of their visit.
  • Inmates may be moved to a different cell on the visitation day. If this was not the fault of the inmate, the visitation privileges remain and will be rescheduled.
  • Only visitors aged 17 and above can visit. Children can only visit during children’s week (the first week of the month).
  • Visitors are required to present a government-issued ID for identification, such as a driver’s license, Texas Election Identification Certificate, a valid voter registration certificate, a Texas personal identification card, or a Texas license to carry a handgun.
  • Visitors should adhere to the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Facility dress code. This states that they should be dressed conservatively, not wear clothes with profanity, not reveal gang tattoos, or show a large expanse of skin.
  • The visitation time and duration depend on the type of inmate and the area of visit. Intending visitors should confirm the appropriate time from the Hidalgo County detention center’s visitation schedule.
